My Mini Vacation & New Year 2019

    It was time for us to have a mini vacation & as Appa is in Yelagiri hills we decided to go spend some time there. Arrived on Saturday that too so late because of all the traffic in the highway & one quick question. Who blocks a four/six lane Highway By-pass with barricades? My god the highway from Chennai to Yelagiri is filled with barricades at all unlikely places & I am sure that they cause more accidents than before.
    Anyhoo after a chilly Chennai we reached a freezing Yelagiri. Spent the whole of Sunday on the swing in the porch, reading a book. On Monday, I spent the day reading & sleeping to prepare for the New Year night!!!My niece got pissed of at me for reading books all the time & asked "Are you gonna be like this all day?"(In a sarcastic & accusatory tone)
     This year with my brother's family, my dad, my uncle, niece, PV & Varun we set up a camp fire in the garden & barbecued some chicken & welcomed the year with crackers. It was so cold at 16C but our Varun refused to wear jacket/hat. Had to wriggle him inside.
    8 years ago I spent my mother's last New year in Yelagiri & after that I never felt like going there for the New year. Back of my mind, I felt sad that it was one more year without mom & I really miss her during these times. Years may fly by, but the yearning to be with her grows more with time. We also talked about all the people who left us behind with their memories. In a way it was nice to talk & remember them on the New year!!!!

        Jampaica/Rose Apple/Water Apple/Malay Apple/Paneer Koiya these are the different names of the same fruit and these are my absolute favorite. Its sweet, a bit tangy & juicy. Usually we eat with some rock salt & chilly powder.     In my native, this tree used to grow in my Aunt Padma Athai's home. I used to go there & eat all the fruit!!! When my father planted some fruit trees in our farm my only request was for these fruits & the plant that he had never bore any fruit till the end. Every time i used to go, i literally searched the plant with a fine tooth comb for any sight of fruit. When I was pregnant with Varun my craving for this fruit was at its peak & I used to cry wanting them. Pasta Mania

        Right from my childhood one of my favorite recipe was Macaroni. Mom used to make with all the vegetables & it used to be crunchy & spicy. Whenever i go home for Vacation from college this was on the menu. PV too shared my love for this macaroni of mom's. Amma used to pack this as lunch for PV & me during the car travel from Nagercoil to Chennai. But one hour into our journey we would practically polish off the whole box. I have tried so many times to replicate mom's recipe & have never been successful. Most days the longing for mom's macaroni taste has broken me completely.    So nowadays i dont try to replicate hers, instead have come up with numerous other variations. I make them with Paneer, Chicken, Vegetables, Eggs, etc. I usually eyeball the ingredients. The pasta that i tried recently for dinner was a super duper hit & i just wanted to share it here. The Long Awaited Vacation - Part 2

     On friday(Jan 17) I woke up around 6.30 and geared up with hoodie and walked outside. Two doggies Ladoo & Boondhi greeted me. The caretaker called out and i was able to see just two bisons from a herd of atleast 50 to 60 on a nearby grassland. We had breakfast and got to pluck fresh strawberry & Potatoes from their backyard. It was a unique & beautiful experience.     By 11, they took us on a Jeep drive to a nearby Waterfalls called Chilanthiyar. This place is accessible only by Four wheel rides that too only jeeps and by walk. There was no roads only small boulders and by the time we reached down to the falls my legs were literally shaking with fear. The water was super cold and Varun enjoyed walking in them. The walk down was steep and enjoyable.The walk up literally left me out of breath and we super struggled to reach our jeep.      The Jeep ride to the top of the hill was one of the most unforgettable experiences in my lifetime.
